Not all cleaning products belong in the same cupboard. Mixing the wrong two together can produce toxic fumes, and it happens more easily than people realise. Here’s what to never combine, and why.

Bleach and ammonia

This combination produces chloramine gas, which can cause coughing, breathing difficulty, and chest pain. Many glass cleaners contain ammonia, so never follow bleach with one.

Bleach and vinegar (or any acid)

Mixing bleach with an acidic cleaner releases chlorine gas, which is toxic even in small amounts. This includes some limescale removers and toilet bowl cleaners.

Different drain cleaners

If one drain cleaner hasn’t worked, don’t add a second product on top. The chemical reaction between different formulas can cause dangerous heat, splashing, or toxic gas.

Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar

Individually safe, but combined they form peracetic acid, which is corrosive to skin, eyes, and the respiratory tract.
